a word about vacuuming
ByVacuuming seems like such a simple thing but its also very important to keep carpet looking good for as long as possible.
Dirt and grit act like sandpaper on the carpet fibers prematurely wearing the carpet . So here are some thoughts-
Canistor vacuums seem to have superior suction over bag vacs plus you can see exactly what you are pulling out of each individual area. I find it oddly satisfying and even a little addicting.
The roller bar on your vac is also very important for pulling up hair etc. that just suction alone has a hard time pulling up.(some wool carpet manufacturers dont recommend using a brush)
Many have strong opions on vacuums but if you can test several it can be eye opening.
Vacuuming before having a carpet proffesionaly cleaned is a good idea(i do a thorough vacuuming before cleaning unless the customer has just done it) because you want to remove the dry particulate soil first before you wet the carpet. Things like hair and grit are much easier to pull up dry than wet so prevacuuming makes for a better job overall because the chemicals, very hot water and powerful suction of the machine can work on what they were meant to do- sanitize and remove the oily deep down soils and stains etc. in the carpet and upholstery.
